Hand Restoration and Rejuvenation
After making significant improvements to the face, many clients continue to be concerned with the appearance of their hands.
With the passage of time, there is a noticeable loss of volume of the soft tissues of the hands. The knuckles become more prominent; veins are increasingly visible; and tendons of the back of the hand create contour irregularities on the back oif the hand.
In addition, some clients note an increase in brown discoloration of the skin of the back of the hand.
In order to restore an attractive appearance to the hand, volume may be replenished by strategically grafting, or transferring, fat to the dorsum of the hand. Fat is harvested from the lower abdomen or hip area using and applied to the hand using micro-grafting techniques. Micro-fat Grafting minimizes contour irregularities and increases the likelihood of fat survival. The goal of fat grafting is to camouflage unsightly veins and tendons while decreasing the prominence of the knuckles.
For reasons that are not completely understood, fat grafting improves the texture of the skin. The skin maybe further improved with the use of medium depth peels or High Intensity Microfocused Ultrasound (Ulthera).
Fat is a natural and durable filler with results lasting several years.
One should consider hand rejuvenation if you are concerned with any of the following:
- Loss of volume of the hand resulting in a skeletal appearance
- Prominent veins on the back of the hand
- Visible tendons on the back of the hand
- Skin discolorations – especially on the back of the hand
Hand rejuvenation with fat is an office procedure performed with local anesthesia. A gentle compression dressing is applied at the completion of the procedure and clients are instructed to avoid using their hands except for normal daily activities. Dressings remain in place for 2-3 days and are removed at the first follow-up. In clients who prefer hand rejuvenation without fat grafting, rejuvenation is possible with HA Fillers such as Radiesse or Restylane.
