Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty is a procedure to reshape the inner lips of the vulva also known as the labia minora. The procedure may be performed as a single procedure in the office under local anesthesia or in combination with other cosmetic procedures as part of a more comprehensive rejuvenation plan. The number of women seeking labiaplasty has seen steady increases since 2015.
The labia minora may be either naturally large or lose tone and become longer with aging. In both cases, they extend beyond the border of the vulva.
Women seek labiaplasty for some of the following reasons:
Painful intercourse
Pain with exercise
Pain associated with fitted garments
The goal of the labiaplasty is to reduce the size of the labia in order that they do not protrude beyond the vulva border and are nestled within the vulva. In cases where the vulva itself has lost volume and may be flaccid, fat may be transferred to the vulva to create a plump and rejuvenated appearance.
Labiaplasty may be accomplished with two different techniques: the edge method or the wedge method. In cases where the labia are larger with an irregular border, I prefer the edge technique. In those cases where the border is relatively smooth, I will offer the wedge technique. In general, neither technique results in decreased sensitivity or numbness.
The ultimate goal of labiaplasty is to restore and rejuvenate the labia and the surrounding vulva to the appearance of pubescence. I view it as both a functional and cosmetic procedure.
Recovery usually takes 1-2 weeks with full resumption of normal activities at 3-4 weeks. The only analgesics required after the procedure are Tylenol or Advil.
