Shapely and voluminous lips confer facial harmony and serve as an important focal point of the face. Shapely and voluminous lips convey the idea of health and youth.
With advancing age, several changes may be noted in the lips. As underlying facial bones lose volume, the upper lip gives the illusion of becoming longer; the red lip becomes thinner; the corners of the mouth turn down; and features of the upper lip, philtral columns and white roll, lose their definition and ability to highlight the lips.
The cumulative effect of these changes is a tired and saddened appearance.
Fortunately, many of these changes can be easily reversed with the proper and critical application of HA fillers.
The goal of lip rejuvenation or augmentation with HA fillers is to increase the height of the red lip; increase the projection of the lips towards an idealized profile; restore the correct ratio between the upper and lower lips; and restore the white roll and philtral columns.
I avoid overfilled and over projecting lip augmentations as I feel this creates a dysmorphic and cartoonish appearance that is not sustainable over time.
In some cases, I recommend a surgical upper lift in advance of volume augmentation of the upper lip. This simple in office procedure restores and attractive dental show in cases of elongated upper lips and allows for attractive lip augmentation.
HA fillers may also be applied to support the corners of the lips and simple treatment restores the lip to a neutral and non-saddened position.
One should consider Lip Augmentation for the following reasons:
- Thinning of the upper lip with loss of red lip height
- Downward corners of the lips
- Increasing length of the upper lip
- Unacceptable cosmetic appearance of the lips
Treatment of the lips is a safe procedure and is performed in our offices. Although bruising is uncommon, it may occur in any patient and resolves in 2-3 days. Most clients do have short term (4-6 hours) swelling following injections to the lips. I do not recommend lip augmentation prior to any important social or work related events.
