Neck Contouring
Treatment of sagging tissues of the neck or loose skin is frequently requested by our clients and is of particular concern to men. Frequently, the neck may age at a different pace than the face thus creating a visual incongruity. It is also true that it is difficult to achieve a rejuvenated face without improving the neck – the pedestal upon which the face is displayed.
The aging neck is characterized by loss of the sharp sub-mental angle – the angle formed by the chin and neck; localized fatty deposits; and overactive bands of muscles also known as platysmal bands.
Surgical neck contouring and rejuvenation is accomplished with a small chin incision and tightening of the platysma muscle – the muscle that drapes the front of the neck. In some cases when platysmal banding is present, the bands may be divided and eliminated.
I frequently combine Platysmaplasty with Liposculpting of the neck to remove fat in order to reveal a youthful contour. As Dr. Feldman points out in his excellent book on this topic, the neck does not have to be lifted so much as it has to be shaped.
Platysmaplasty may be combined with facelift procedures. The results may be further enhanced or maintained with Ulthera which is performed in our clinic. Results may be further enhanced with chemical peeling of the neck skin.
Many clients request Minimally Invasive Rejuvenation of the neck.
Fortunately, in select clients, this may be achieved with Liposculpting of the neck combined with energy based treatments. In our practice, we prefer to combine liposculpting of the neck with Ulthera.
The procedure involves Liposculpting with small cannulas, performed under local anesthesia, followed by treatment with ultrasound skin tightening. The entire procedure is safely performed in our Brookhaven clinic.
Not all patients are candidates for the minimally invasive approach to neck rejuvenation and a formal surgical procedure may be required for optimal results.
One should consider contouring of the neck for the following reasons:
- Visible platysmal or vertical bands of the neck
- Visible neclace or horizontal lines of the neck
- Excess skin under the chin or a waddle
