Otoplasty
Otoplasty is the technical term for ear-pinning.
Otoplasty is indicated in cases of prominent ears. Although prominent ears are generally corrected during the pre-school years, the condition may persist well into adulthood. Many clients express that they are acutely self conscious with prominent ears. Many clients report being teased in their younger years due to facial disharmony or as a “funny looking kid.” The facial imbalance as a result of prominaura (prominent ears) is easily recognized as we humans innately understand when facial features are not in balance.
Otoplasty or ear reduction surgery is an extremely satisfying procedure that yields immediate permanent results and dramatic improvement. The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient surgical procedure. The surgery involves several steps including reshaping of the ear cartilage, frequently special stitches are used to maintain the newly created shape of the ear. The last step is removal of excess skin in order to create an aesthetically pleasing ear.
One should consider ear surgery for the following reasons:
- Prominent ears creating self consciousness
- Lack of a normal fold in the ear
- Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the ear
The procedure is concluded with the application of a special dressing in order to support the newly created shape of the ear. Maintenance of the dressing for several days following the procedure is vital to supporting the newly shaped ear and promoting healing. The dressing is removed at the first follow up appointment several days later.
If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your ears, please arrange for a personal consultation to determine whether you will benefit from otoplasty surgery.
